Canberra man sentenced to jail for repeated burglaries

Updated

A Canberra man has been sentenced to four years in jail for stealing hundreds of dollars worth of electronics from two houses in the city’s inner-west.

The 29-year-old had pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and arson against a home that contained a second house.

A police-led investigation into burglary and arson at the homes involved several houses across Sydney’s inner-west broke out in September 2015.

The houses had been vacant since 2009 and the police found thousands of items worth more than $1 million inside their basement.

They were confiscated by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC), which then referred the matter to the state police.

Defence lawyer Mark Jorgensen QC told the court the man would not be eligible for parole until he served at least four years for these offences.

Judge Dolly Maitland set bail at $500,000, with all other conditions including no contact with his girlfriend and no contact with his parents.

Magistrate Philip Molloy told him his best chance of release would be to undertake community community work.

Sa farming in 2015, the annual number of tonnes that were produced jumped to 20,000 tonnes. But that had dropped to just 3,000 tonnes since 2015 and is still not enough to feed an average Indian farmer who needs about 70 per cent of his crop to survive on.

“India has got enough resources for farming for a long time – all we have been doing is feeding the rich. We have got enough for our food security in a long time, but the current situation is quite serious,” Mr. Vatsala said at a press conference at his farm, which supplies about 30 per cent of all the food to farmers.

The government hopes to bring the average annual yield to around Rs 9,500 by 2015 from the current 5,000 tonnes. This includes more than 8,000 tons of wheat in 2016, Mr. Vatsala told reporters.

“I have seen a reduction in the current yield and I am happy with that because I believe in a change. I believe in crop production efficiency. We cannot keep feeding the middle-income and the poor,” he said.

Farmers in the field agree – most, like Mr. Vatsala, said they saw a better yield than what they were getting previously. But they also saw a decline in the number of cows and calves. “At present, we need two to four to get all the milk we need and one calf can replace half a cow. That means at least half the yield we can get now – and more.”

Even in the northern states, the harvest is not as good as it was in 2000, after a decade-long decline and due to a lack of farmers willing to invest, according to the survey.

“The number of farmers we are meeting here has shrunk from about 3,000 in 2006 to about 6,000 in 2013. But with no infrastructure that can meet the needs for them, they don’t have any money to spend for growing the other crops. It is a difficult problem with no easy solution.”

Paddy farmers don’t agree, either.

“We have no electricity in these two districts and the only option of growing crops is to grow soybean and other crop, but we have only Rs 5 lakh to spend on these two crops, just to make a small cash profit in a couple of months. It is very difficult for us,” said P. K. Sharma.

One farmer who doesn’t want to be named said that in the last two years, the amount of money his family has invested in growing crops, has been hit by demonetisation, because it doesn’t cover the cost of getting seeds and fertilizers.

“All these years, the people have used up all the savings, and now th
